What are bony stress reactions and how are they caused and treated?

-

They present as swelling within the bone as a response to undue stresses and may eventually develop into tiny cracks such as stress fractures if the external loads continue. They usually occur when the amount or intensity of an activity is increased too rapidly. The primary treatment is rest, which could simply be avoiding the sport or activity that causes pain or the use of crutches, braces, boots etc. Then physio and rehab are introduced.
