HOW TO PAINT... LIGHT CLOUDS

-

1 Prepare a strong mix of Cobalt Blue and water on your palette. Load a wash brush with the mix and paint your sky leaving a rough, cloudshaped space. Angle your paper to allow the paint to flow down – the greater the angle, the greater the flow. My board is at roughly 40-45 degrees.

2 Clean your brush. Make a weak mix of Burnt Sienna with water on your palette. With a full brush of the Burnt Sienna mix, fill in the cloud space. Press harder with your brush where the colours meet to control the strength of the soft blend.

3 Continue down the paper, repeating steps 1 and 2 to add more blue and more cloud mix. Remember that lower clouds will be further away so making them smaller will increase the feeling of depth. This method is sufficient to create the wispy, hazy cirrus type of cloud.

4 If you want more of a puffy, cumulus type of cloud, scrunch a paper towel in the rough shape of a brush and hold it around 3-5cm from the tip. Use this to lift out a stronger harder edge. Avoid pushing right down with the towel as this can dry the edge too much.
