Nissan unveils Leaf-like electric and autonomous SUV
NISSAN HAS REVEALED the IMX concept in Tokyo – an SUV with full-electric powertrain and autonomous capabilities that resembles its Leaf EV.
The car is powered by a pair of electric motors that give four-wheel drive and combine for 423bhp and 516lb ft.
The battery pack has been fettled for increased energy density, adding to the EV’S packaging benefits. Like the new Leaf, the IMX is based on Nissan’s evolved EV architecture.
The model also showcases a next-generation version of Nissan’s semi-autonomous Propilot system, adapted to offer full autonomy.
When Propilot is driving, the steering wheel retracts into the dashboard, similar to Volkswagen’s range of full-electric, autonomous ID concepts. The seats also recline for passenger comfort when the car is fully in control.
The Imx’s infotainment displays are controlled by gestures and eye movements monitored by artificial intelligence systems.
The concept continues Nissan’s scheme for EVS to act as temporary energy storage solutions and can return power to the grid when not in use.
Nissan has halted production at its Japanese plants for at least two weeks following the discovery that final checks were being carried out by unqualified staff members. In the meantime, Nissan will adjust its final vehicle inspection lines to match the configuration submitted to Japanese authorities. Neither UK production nor models sold here are affected.
