THINKING FORWARD TO LOOK BACK

The E-tron introduces Audi’s new Virtual Mirror technology – a function officials suggest will also be offered on the upcoming E-tron Sportback and E-tron GT. It uses digital cameras mounted on small arms to display video on a pair of 7.0in displays mounted within the door panels. Their main purpose is to reduce aerodynamic drag, but Audi also admits the hope is that the high-tech appearance will also appeal to buyers.

Checking the displays within the door panels takes some getting used to because they are mounted lower and much closer to you than conventional exterior door mirrors. Glare is also a problem in strong daylight, although the field of view can be adjusted via a touch function.
