THE PREVIOUS FORD Edge was a competent SUV, but priced alongside some very capable competitors from a number of premium manufacturers, it was certainly no class leader. Nor is it a class leader following this midlife facelift, which brings a more attractive front-end treatment and a smarter cabin.

The biggest improvements have been made beneath the bonnet, where the new and very good 237bhp 2.0 twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine resides, as well as at ground level, where the revised intelligent four-wheel-drive system is now much quicker to react. This is a capable SUV that’s a little short on brand cachet.
