Chinese newcomer Nio has revealed ambitious plans for its range of premium SUVS. The New York Stock Exchange-listed company has just launched its second model, the allelectric five-seat ES6, which is intended to take on premium EVS such as the Audi E-tron.

Order books have opened in China for the all-wheel drive ES6, with prices starting at the equivalent of £41,075.

The ES6 shares its platform with the ES8 seven-seat SUV, which went on sale last July. It uses two electric motors, one on each axle, and a liquidcooled lithium ion battery. Performance and Standard models are available with either a new 84kwh battery or Nio’s current 70kwh pack. The Performance model features a 240kw motor at the front and 160kw motor at the rear, for totals of 544bhp and 535lb ft. Claimed performance is a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and a top speed of 125mph. Range is 319 miles on the NEDC cycle.

The Standard version has two 160kw motors, giving a claimed 0-62mph time of 5.6sec. Its NEDC range is 256 miles, although the 84kwh battery increases this to 300 miles.

Nio, which was founded in 2014, will launch its third model, a saloon called the ET7, later this year. Currently it only sells cars in China but is planning to extend sales to Europe and the US. CEO William Li, whose background is in digital marketing, is known as China’s Elon Musk. The company became NYSE listed in September last year and is currently valued at £6.1 billion.
