Shedding some light
I write in support of Rob Lightbody’s reaction to the horrors of some, but not all, LED headlights (Your Views, 12/19 December). Although LEDS produce a whiter light, the manufacturers must ensure by measuring the power consumption that the 60W limit is not exceeded. Some LED headlights have beams that are focused and do not dazzle.
The problem appears to be the geometry of the reflectors. Those shaped to fit the contours of the bodywork seem to produce blinding halos. We think that this should be addressed by regulators by the introduction of new testing equipment to measure the glare produced. Meantime, I have found that using yellow-tinted night driving glasses is of considerable help. Prof Philip James
