Memories of Russell Bulgin
I really enjoyed reading the Christmas special double issue this year. I think it is one of the best you have ever produced. The feature about your writers’ favourite motoring books of all time got me thinking. I, too, have enjoyed Damon Hill’s autobiography, although I also thought Jackie Stewart’s was insightful about Formula 1 in a different era and that would make my shortlist.
However, my all-time favourite is The Very Best of Russell Bulgin, a collection of works from across his writing career. I recall reading Russell’s columns in the 1980s and 1990s and marvelling at how he could so vividly use words to convey how the cars he described really felt, as well as deploying off beat humour in observing some of the
current motoring issues of the day. Your feature has prompted me to retrieve my copy from the corner of a bookcase and re-read it. Thanks for stimulating some great memories. Matthew Harris Reading
