FOUR NEW FORD SUVS FOR 2020
EXPLORER
Tipped to make a return to the UK as part of Ford’s renewed SUV focus is the Explorer. The large, sevenseat SUV, which would sit above the Edge, has proven popular in the US and provides an alternative to declining MPVS such as the Galaxy. The new Mk6 model has been revealed at the Detroit motor show sporting fresh styling and a move from front- to rear-wheel drive for entry-level models.
ECOSPORT REPLACEMENT
Ford is due to replace the Ecosport with a new small crossover that demonstrates stronger family ties with the Fiesta. Recent photos of prototypes reveal styling heavily inspired by its supermini sibling, with which the unnamed model will share its platform and many of its engines. The Ecosport, which has been on sale since 2014, has failed to meet sales expectations alongside the bestselling Fiesta.
NEW KUGA
As Ford’s biggest-selling SUV in Europe, the Kuga is vital to its growth plans. An all-new thirdgeneration model is due to arrive next year, again sharing a common architecture with the Focus hatchback, alongside much of that car’s technology and powertrain choices. Spy shots of it with minimal disguise reveal a Focus-inspired design, too. Today’s Kuga remains one of the strongest sellers in its segment, despite it being on sale since 2013.
MACH 1
Ford’s first bespoke battery electric model is set to be an SUV and is due next year. Dubbed Mach 1 in reference to its Mustangderived styling features, it’s described as a “performance utility vehicle” and is expected to top the brand’s European range in terms of pricing. Few details of the car have been released and there is no indication yet of the size of the EV powertrain or its range.
