Mazda targets Qashqai with CX-30

-

MAZDA HAS REVEALED its CX-30 SUV at the Geneva show. The Nissan Qashqai rival, which sits between the CX-3 and CX-5, is based on the recently launched Mazda 3 hatch and is described as a new “core model” in the firm’s line-up. It will go on sale later this year powered by a range of petrol hybrid and diesel engines.

The compact crossover features Mazda’s distinctive Kodo design language and will use the firm’s latest powertrains, including the Skyactiv-x compressionignition engine. Mazda says the CX-30 will be a global model “made at key global plants”.

All of the petrol engines offered in the car will be mild-hybrid units, featuring an electric motor driven by a 24V battery. The CX-30 will also be offered with Mazda’s Skyactiv-d diesel engine. The exact powertrain line-up for the UK has yet to be confirmed, but all models will feature all-wheel drive balanced by a central torque distribution system. Sixspeed manual and automatic gearboxes will be available.

Mazda says the SUV has been styled to reflect the “flowing beauty of a coupé and the bold toughness of an SUV”. It features a bold, large, triangular grille similar to that seen on the 3, along with the traditional high-riding SUV stance, black body trim and a relatively sleek rear end. There are also optional LED headlights and progressive indicators.

The CX-30 is 4395mm long, 1795mm wide and 1540mm tall. It is built on the same Skyactiv platform as the 3, and it has been honed to offer dynamic handling, Mazda says, despite its high-riding SUV form. It also has a 430-litre boot, which matches that of the Qashqai. The interior has a driver-focused cockpit with a two-part ‘wing’ design and a driver-focused 8.8in central infotainment screen. The driver display mixes analogue and digital information displays.
