MOTORSPORT GREATS
MONTJUIC PARK
Set on a hill to the south-west of Barcelona city centre, this elegant wooded park proved an unlikely but spectacular venue for the Spanish Grand
Prix. Montjuïc shared the race with Jarama, hosting it four times between 1969 and 1975. Spectacularly fast, barrier-lined sweeps combined with a tighter section to create a demanding street course already outdated by its danger 50 years ago. The final grand prix in 1975 was overshadowed by an argument about safety and then a crash that killed five people. The race was stopped and half-points were given, with Lella Lombardi – the only woman to score in the F1 World Championship – earning 0.5 for sixth.
