GREAT BRITISH GRAND PRIX FAN MOMENTS

-

1976

Broken suspension means James Hunt isn’t allowed to take the restart at Brands Hatch after a first-lap crash. In unprecedented scenes, fans throw cans onto the track. Fearing a riot, officials allow Hunt to race. He wins but is disqualified two months later.

1994

Michael Schumacher finally accepts a black flag for passing Damon Hill on the warm-up lap, leaving Britain’s new hero to achieve what his father Graham never could by winning his home grand prix. Princess Diana presents Hill with his trophy.

1987

Post-race track invasions are nothing new, but Nigel Mansell inspires new levels of mania when he chases down and passes team-mate Nelson Piquet. His Williams-honda wilts after the flag drops, so he completes his slow-down lap riding pillion on a police motorcycle.

2003

A defrocked Catholic priest takes fan engagement to new levels by running onto the Hangar Straight during the race, waving a sign saying ‘Read the Bible’ and is narrowly missed by Mark Webber’s Jaguar. Rubens Barrichello scores his greatest win for Ferrari.

1991, 1992

Mansell-mania hits its crescendo as ‘Our Nige’ returns to Williams after two seasons at Ferrari and dominates at Silverstone in back-to-back races. Purists decry a ‘hooligan’ atmosphere; the rest relish a newfound national enthusiasm for F1.

2019

Lewis Hamilton scores his record sixth home win, triggering a repeat of what has become his trademark crowdsurfing celebration at Silverstone. He won without fans to celebrate with him in 2020. Will his crowdsurfing be repeated this weekend?
