BMW Z1 1989
Although not short of familiar BMW cues, the Z1 was unusual enough to be a head-turner. Its most famous features were its downward-retractable doors, but there were other intriguing elements, too, such as advanced aerodynamics and a multilink rear suspension that was later used on more conventional BMWS. On top of all that, the plastic body panels were removable, so theoretically you could persuade your neighbours you had bought a new Z1 by fitting a new set of a different colour.
