1980s SALES 913,336 ON THE ROAD IN 1995 684,232 NOW 319 SURVIVAL RATE 0.05% British Leyland’s late entrant to the supermini class was meant to save the British car industry. Although well packaged, practical and decent handling, the Metro soon had serious competition from the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 205, and sales declined from 1983 onwards. Austin-badged cars are very rare; there are around 2300 Rover ones from the 1990s still out there, along with 109 MGS.
