It didn’t have to die

-

I couldn’t agree more with your assertion that the BMW i3 is a future classic (‘The immortals’, 23 February).

I’ve just taken delivery of my second i3 before production ceases in July. Why has BMW missed the opportunity to continue production of this EV icon, which was at launch is 2013 a trendsetter in so many respects, not just as an EV?

This inspired design could have continued for several more years yet if only BMW had taken the opportunity to upgrade the battery and thereby extend its range to something nearer to 250 miles.

The progress in battery technology since the previous upgrade [in late 2018] surely makes this a no-brainer.

But even without it, I’m more than happy to enjoy my second i3 for years to come, and that’s from somebody who would never have considered any other BMW model.

Sadly, it’s too late for BMW to change its mind. Opportunity lost.
