ICE is the new vinyl

-

In the late 1980s, during a period of high inflation, like now, I wondered when the prices of new-technology compact disc albums would come down to match those of their vinyl record equivalents. It never really happened: instead, vinyl record prices rose to be closer in price to CD prices.

On reading your first drive of the £30,000 Mazda MX-5 (10 April), which mentioned how this was an example of “how bonkers car prices have become”, it made me wonder if we will ever see EVS come down to the cost of their ICE equivalent. Rather, I suspect that history is repeating itself and we’re witnessing ICE car prices rising to meet those of EVS.

While consumers largely accepted paying more for their albums, it remains to be seen if they will do so for the much larger purchase of a car. Eric Kilpatrick
