Get your priorities right
It’s clear the new Highway Code rules haven’t been communicated well.
Last week, I saw a 17- to 20-yearold step off the high street pavement into moving traffic, nowhere near a junction, and shouted to the drivers his belief that: “It’s the law now. You have to stop if I want to cross the road. I can walk down the middle of the road if I like.”
Clearly he has misunderstood the new guidance, which applies when turning in and out of junctions.
It got me wondering how many pedestrians have heard the headline guidance of “hierarchy priority given to pedestrians and cyclists” and interpreted it in much the same way, not bothering to read the detail.
If they continue under this illusion, they might well win Darwin Awards. Ed S
