Taxing logic

I agree with many of the points made by Nick Gibbs in his news article about plug-in hybrids (30 March), but he fails to mention one aspect of the car tax system that must surely contribute to the misuse of such cars.

After paying an annual tax charge, a fuel card-carrying employee can put as much petrol or diesel into their PHEV as they like without paying any extra money, whereas every time they plug it in at home, the electricit­y bill comes out of their taxed income.

So it seems that our government’s policy is to handsomely reward employees for choosing a PHEV in the first place but then penalise them if they should ever dare to plug it in. Not exactly joined-up thinking, is it? Graham Hill
