The template for all future VW interiors

-

FUTURE VOLKSWAGEN car interiors will all draw inspiration from the ID 2all concept car, having physical buttons and controls.

VW interior designer Darius Watola said the concept “showed a new approach for all models” and was in response to “recent feedback from customers” about the touchscreen-heavy approach the German brand had taken.

The ID 2all’s interior has a row of physical (and backlit) buttons for the climate and a rotary dial on the centre console that controls the screen on the dash above.

As well as that central touchscreen for infotainment, there is a second screen for driving information. Watola said a display in the driver’s eyeline was crucial for safety.

He said “customers had a different view in Europe” than in other global markets and want “more physical buttons”.

Volkswagen is also looking to phase out hard plastics, glue, leather and chrome.

Almost every surface in the ID 2all is soft to the touch, mixing fabrics and Alcantara as part of a sustainability push. There is limited use of some woods and metals, too.

Watola expressed a desire to transfer as many features and materials as possible from the concept to the 2025 production car, which now seems unlikely to take the ID 2 name into showrooms.

However, the goal remains a sub-£22,000 price, which may limit some of the plusher materials in the cabin.

The concept’s screens can be configured in different themes, including the retro look of the original Golf, and this feature is expected to make production.

Also expected to be kept are its clever storage features, such as the foldable rear bench that allows a bike to be carried in the footwells and a storage space beneath the boot floor that is big enough for three large drinks crates.
