Dancer calls the tune in Japan
Dancing to music? That’s old hat. Here’s an instance of the music being created by the dance itself. At a concert in Hamamatsu, Japan, Kaiji Moriyama created Mai Hi Ten Yu, a new composition for piano and strings, simply by moving his body and letting technology do the rest. Sensors placed on parts of the dancer’s anatomy picked up signals that were converted into data – this data was then sent to a Yamaha player piano and translated into music. While Moriyama performed the solo dance/piano part, accompaniment was provided by the Berlin Philharmonic’s Scharoun Ensemble.
