Invisible Threads

John Surman (soprano & baritone sax, bass clarinet), Nelson Ayres (piano), Rob Waring (vibraphone, marimba)

Although saxist John Surman made his name playing his baritone with an agile technique the instrument hardly seemed designed for, there were always lyrical aspects to his playing, drawing from his West Country roots, as revealed on Westering Home (1972). Invisible Threads continues this aspect of Surman’s work, with haunting compositions played with grace, and ostinatos interwoven with fleeting melodies that sometimes dance, soothe or evoke an ethereal mood. His plaintive soprano sax enhances the delicate beauty of several tunes, including the opener ‘At First Sight’ and the furtive ‘Summer Song’, while his baritone and grainy bassclarinet are as tactile as oak on ‘The Admiral’. Pianist Nelson Ayres and percussionist Rob Waring prove ideal companions to journey through an often wistful landscape. Although only brought into the project just before recording, they inhabit the music like long-term associates, producing gorgeous accompaniments and fine solos. Ayres contributes the sprightly ‘Summer Song’, following on from the playful ‘Pitanga Pitomba’. ★★★★★
