Three to look out for
Alan Davey, the controller of BBC Radio 3, picks out three great moments to tune into this March
International Women’s Day
The centre-piece of Radio 3’s coverage of International Women’s Day on 8 March (see box, p118) is a special Live in Concert from LSO St Luke’s where five newly discovered works by women composers – including Florence Price and Marianna Martines – are being performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Jane Glover conducts. Radio 3 Live in Concert; 8 March, 7.30pm
Free Thinking Festival
A weekend of thought-provoking ideas, debate and music-making is on the cards for Radio 3 at the annual Free Thinking Festival. Among the highlights is a live In Tune performance of The Pankhurst Anthem, a work commissioned by Radio 3 to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage.
Free Thinking Festival; 9-11 March
Debussy Weekend
To mark 100 years since Debussy’s death, Radio 3 dedicates a weekend to the French composer. An eight-part series entitled ‘Facets of Debussy’ looks at his Parisian influences and Hear and Now sees how today’s composers are building on his legacy. Debussy Weekend; 23-25 March
