APRIL TV CHOICE BBC Young Musician at 40
To mark the 40th birthday of BBC Young Musician, a TV documentary BBC Young Musician Forty
Years Young takes a look back at the inf luential competition, focusing on the subsequent careers of the three 2016 finalists, cellist Sheku KannehMason, saxophonist Jess Gillam (above) and French horn player Ben Goldscheider. The programme follows them over the two years since the final, seeing how they have balanced the demands of a blossoming career with studies at music college. All three are making waves and Kanneh-mason has topped the charts with his first CD.
The programme also meets former winners and finalists, including violinists Nicola Benedetti and Jennifer Pike, cellist Natalie Clein, percussionist Adrian Spillett, pianist Martin James Bartlett and oboist Nicholas Daniel. Also interviewed is trumpeter Alison Balsom, now a regular presenter, and Humphrey Burton who co-created the competition and presented it for many years. Other contributors include conductor Mark Wigglesworth and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. ( See next issue for our special feature celebrating the competition at 40).
