Richard Wagner’s music is my doorstep to classical music and it is from there that other composers in the Austro-german repertoire, such as Richard Strauss and Mahler, have made their way onto my CD player. My latest discovery in the field of late-romantics is the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, and especially his songs with orchestra. In his Elegie Op. 36, as recorded by baritone Andreas Schmidt, the essence of the songs is complemented by the beautiful, multicoloured sounds of the orchestra. A revelation!
