NOVEMBER TV CHOICE Our Classical Century
In one of the first major pan-bbc seasons to explore classical music, Our Classical Century is led by a series on BBC Four with accompanying programming on Radio 3’s Essential Classics.
The four-part television series looks at the greatest musical moments of the last 100 years, exploring the impact they had on audiences. The series begins on BBC Four on 15 November, with a programme presented by actor and comedian Lenny Henry. On Radio 3, Essential Classics will be highlighting 100 significant moments in classical music over the last century. The BBC choirs and orchestras will be featured, illustrating some of the key works to come out of the television series.
‘We’ve covered everything from the premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring to the founding of the Chineke! Orchestra,’ says Alan Davey, controller of BBC Radio 3. ‘It turns out an awful lot has happened in the last 100 years of music.’ Our Classical Century will continue into 2019, culminating at the First Night of the Proms.
