NOVEM­BER TV CHOICE Our Clas­si­cal Cen­tury

In one of the first ma­jor pan-bbc sea­sons to ex­plore clas­si­cal mu­sic, Our Clas­si­cal Cen­tury is led by a se­ries on BBC Four with ac­com­pa­ny­ing pro­gram­ming on Ra­dio 3’s Es­sen­tial Classics.

The four-part tele­vi­sion se­ries looks at the great­est mu­si­cal mo­ments of the last 100 years, ex­plor­ing the im­pact they had on au­di­ences. The se­ries be­gins on BBC Four on 15 Novem­ber, with a programme pre­sented by ac­tor and co­me­dian Lenny Henry. On Ra­dio 3, Es­sen­tial Classics will be high­light­ing 100 sig­nif­i­cant mo­ments in clas­si­cal mu­sic over the last cen­tury. The BBC choirs and or­ches­tras will be fea­tured, il­lus­trat­ing some of the key works to come out of the tele­vi­sion se­ries.

‘We’ve cov­ered ev­ery­thing from the premiere of Stravin­sky’s The Rite of Spring to the found­ing of the Chineke! Orches­tra,’ says Alan Davey, con­troller of BBC Ra­dio 3. ‘It turns out an aw­ful lot has hap­pened in the last 100 years of mu­sic.’ Our Clas­si­cal Cen­tury will con­tinue into 2019, cul­mi­nat­ing at the First Night of the Proms.
