Tales from the exam room

Fenella Humphreys Violin

I began violin and piano around the same time. My piano teacher was great at preparing people for exams. I remember my first exam was a bit scary but it didn’t freak me out like competitive music festivals did. My mum figured that music exams should be treat days, so I always had ice cream for breakfast before taking one. The system isn’t right for every kid. I remember teaching someone who hated exams so much that he wanted to give up. Eventually he admitted he liked learning pieces, but was really unhappy about exams. He carried on with lessons and did well without grades. Personally I liked having something to work towards and found that exams set the goals for me.

I took ABRSM Grades 3, 5, 7 and 8, and quite enjoyed them because I enjoy deadlines and pressure. I remember the examiners always had a plate of biscuits and would eat them while I was playing. I hope they were relaxing! Grades are a great way to motivate learners of any age. Music is so subjective, unlike sport, but exams promote dedication and preparation. They were great for me, but I know some people hate them. I would really struggle to be an examiner, though, because I would hate to fail anyone.
