West Side rookie

John Eliot Gardiner, a conductor usually associated with mastery of Monteverdi and brilliance in Bach, is to reveal a rarely-seen side of his musical persona at this year’s Edinburgh Festival – on 5 & 6 August, Gardiner will be taking the reins for two concert performances of Bernstein’s West Side Story. He will be joined for the occasion by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and a cast including soprano Sophia Burgos and tenor Alek Shrader as Maria and Tony.
