Three to look out for
Alan Davey, the controller of BBC Radio 3, picks out three great moments to tune into this June
Mark Simpson’s Clarinet Concerto
It must be a thrill for a composer to be able to write themselves into their music, and Mark Simpson – equally skilled as composer and clarinettist – has done just that. He will be performing the premiere of his Clarinet Concerto among an epic programme of Mozart and Mahler.
Radio 3 in Concert; 18 June, 7.30pm
BBC Cardiff Singer of the World
The biennial competition that helped launch the careers of Jamie Barton, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Bryn Terfel (see Timepiece, p16) returns to BBC Radio 3 and TV this month for its 36th year. Singers from across the world compete for the top prizes. Radio 3 in Concert; 20 & 22 June, 6.30pm
Aldeburgh Festival
Radio 3 brings you two incredible concerts from this year’s festival at Snape Maltings: one from the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, and another from the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Karina Canellakis, who makes her festival debut. Both have works by the festival’s founder Britten at their core. Radio 3 in Concert; 25 & 26 June, 7.30pm
