CRITIC’S CHOICE
Helen Wallace Janá ek’s Glagolitic Mass made a dazzling opener to this year’s BBC Proms: what a privilege to hear the Royal Albert
Hall organ in that extraordinary, frenzied solo before the finale explodes into its headlong descent. A bone-shaking experience. I’ve also been listening to the music of Grace Williams (above) recently, discovering her invigorating Sea Sketches (1944) for string orchestra: there’s such energy and assurance in her work, but her unsettling harmonic shifts, rhythmic wrongfootings and a tang of mystery lure me into re-listening.
