Jon Gibson (b1940)
BACKGROUND TO…
Principally a flautist and saxophone player, Jon Gibson studied in California where he also began composing. Around the same time, he participated in the 1964 world premiere of Terry Riley’s In C and went on to perform in the premiere of Steve Reich’s Drumming – indeed, Reich later wrote Reed Phase with Gibson in mind. Establishing himself firmly in New York’s minimalist melting pot, Gibson performed briefly with La Monte Young’s Theatre of Eternal Music and became a founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968. He plays with the group to this day.
