Principall­y a flautist and saxophone player, Jon Gibson studied in California where he also began composing. Around the same time, he participat­ed in the 1964 world premiere of Terry Riley’s In C and went on to perform in the premiere of Steve Reich’s Drumming – indeed, Reich later wrote Reed Phase with Gibson in mind. Establishi­ng himself firmly in New York’s minimalist melting pot, Gibson performed briefly with La Monte Young’s Theatre of Eternal Music and became a founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968. He plays with the group to this day.
