BBC NOW’S new conductor; return of the missing pipe
Three to look out for…
Will Thomas Bass
Born: Harpenden, UK Career highlight: Performing Nicholas, the Major-domo in Barber’s Vanessa at Glyndebourne. Although it was a small role, I learnt so much from being on stage with such fantastic performers and working with director Keith Warner.
Musical hero: The Italian bass Cesare Siepi’s voice was so warm, rich and powerful. And also John Tomlinson, another bass, because he really cares about text, language and character. He is a singing actor rather than just a singer.
Dream concert: The Three Tenors have dined out long enough – it’s time for The Three Basses! How about John Tomlinson, Cesare Siepi and George London singing the Bass and Heldenbaritone hits?
Idunnu Münch Mezzo-soprano Born: Munich, Germany Career highlight: Being part of the English National Opera Porgy and Bess ensemble and getting the opportunity to work with the company as a Harewood Artist has been a real highlight for me.
Musical hero: Anyone who serves the music with honesty and care for what has been written. I admire people who want to develop, be open-minded and collaborate with other performers rather than serving their own ego.
Dream concert: I would enjoy any concert where I can immerse myself in the world of the music and take everyone with me on that journey.
Andrew Tyson Pianist
Born: Durham,
North Carolina, US Career highlight: Going to Russia for the first time in 2014 and playing in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory was unforgettable. Musical hero: The pianist Alfred Cortot’s playing has infiltrated everything
I do. Beyond the imagination of his interpretations, he was an endlessly searching musician. He studied deeply and his decisions were anything but arbitrary. Dream concert: I would love to play free concerts in rural areas for those with limited access to live music, ideally with good friends.
