Writing for stage
The great 20th-century playwright Bertolt Brecht, born in Augsburg in 1898, is up there with Leopold Mozart as one of the city’s most cherished figures; a Brecht Festival takes place in the city every year. The house in which Brecht was born is now a museum, just a short walk from the town hall.
It was at school in Augsburg that Brecht met Caspar Neher, with whom he had a long working relationship. Neher became a stage and set designer for theatre and opera. The pair worked together on Brecht’s Mahagonny Songspiel, featuring music by Kurt Weill.
