Music in miniature
Margaret Leng Tan has taken a tiny instrument and made a big impact on the world… much like the mini city state of Singapore. The pianist is the world’s first toy piano virtuoso – the New York Times hailed her as ‘the queen of the toy piano’, although presumably there wasn’t a vast amount of competition for that title. Tan made her name with the 1997 recording The Art of the Toy Piano and is best known for her interpretations of music by the likes of John Cage and George Crumb. In 1993, she performed Cage’s Suite for Toy Piano at a memorial concert for the composer in New York.
