CRITIC’S CHOICE

After a spot of
January musical detox (think Arvo
Pärt and Hildegard of Bingen), it was time to come up for some invigorating air. For me, one of the lasting legacies of last year’s ‘Venus Unwrapped’ series at Kings Place has been the discovery of Polish composer Gra yna Bacewicz. From Schumann to Shostakovich, the piano quintet repertoire is a goldmine, and her feistily distinctive 1951 contribution casts a distinctive gleam.
