Alan Davey, the controller of BBC Radio 3, picks out three great moments to tune into this March Beethoven’s Fidelio

The Royal Opera House brings in Beethoven’s 250th anniversar­y year with a sold-out new production of the great composer’s only opera. Its starry cast includes Lise Davidsen and Jonas Kaufmann in the leading roles.

Join the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the climax of its series exploring the unique cinematic soundworld­s of Swedish composer Anders Hillborg. His First Violin Concerto and flamboyant new Clarinet Concerto receive UK premieres in a programme of works inspired by Nordic landscapes. Radio 3 in Concert: 2 March, 7.30pm Internatio­nal Women’s Day

Radio 3 pays tribute to female composers on 8 March, beginning at 1am with works by women played throughout the night. Highlights on the day include the premiere of a choral work by seven female composers including Cecilia Mcdowall and Rhian Samuel (see p17).
