Pianist Sabine Weyer shares three cherished recordings from her own collection Stenhammar Piano Concerto No. 2

Stenhammar’s music reminds me a lot of Sibelius. His Piano Concerto No. 2 is so lyrical and expressive; it should have a place in the piano repertoire as much as any other Romantic concerto, and I’d love to perform it. I’m also really fond of his string quartets and symphonies. He had a breakthrough when he wrote his Second Symphony; you can feel a change in his way of writing from that point.
Bacri Une Prière, Op. 52

I have just recorded some piano works by Nicolas Bacri for my new album, so I’m into this music right now. I discovered Bacri two or three years ago and I was very impressed because he is very much into lyricism and melody. In my mind this is really what music should sound like today. This is a violin concerto and I think out of all of his work, it’s the piece that is emotionally the most direct. It’s also the work that’s the most clear, formally speaking. So it’s not just beautiful, it’s well constructed. Bax November Woods
Ulster Orchestra/bryden Thomson Chandos CHAN 10156X
Arnold Bax’s
November Woods is such a moody piece. I can just put the music on, relax and imagine everything that I hear. It’s not really programme music, but I can feel what is expressed, and pictures come into my mind when I hear it; I also love it so much because of the way he orchestrates it; it’s very refined.
At the beginning of the piece I can imagine a breeze when the harp is doing glissandos and when the soft theme in the woodwinds appears.
