2nd: President Friedrich Ebert announces that the Deutschlandlied is now Germany’s national anthem. The ‘Song of Germany/ Germans’ sets a poem by August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben to music by Joseph Haydn, who composed the hymn in 1797 in celebration of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II.

5th: An explosion in Haig Colliery in Whitehaven on the coast of Cumbria, caused by a shot fired within a pocket of gas, results in 39 deaths. Severe facial damage makes identification of the bodies difficult; one man is identified by his belt and trousers alone.

15th: Conflict between the UK and Turkey seems imminent when, at the height of the Chanak Crisis, the leader of the Turkish national movement Mustafa Kemal Atatürk threatens to march on Constantinople, held since World War I by the Allied powers. David Lloyd George’s calls for war are supported by neither the British public nor by the UK’S allies, and his poor handling of the crisis contributes to his downfall as prime minister.

22nd: The Liverpool-born opera and concert baritone Sir Charles Santley dies aged 88. One of Victorian England’s best known singers, Santley joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society at age 15. He trained and performed in Italy before returning to England, where he continued an illustrious career that lasted over 60 years. In 1870, he led the cast of The Flying Dutchman, Wagner’s first opera staged in London.

27th: The world’s first 3D film, The Power of Love, premieres at the Ambassador Hotel Theatre in Los Angeles. In addition to offering 3D vision, anaglyph spectacles offer the audience two alternate endings: one viewed through the spectacles’ red lens, one through the green. Though it receives positive reviews, the film is screened only a handful of times, and both the 3D and 2D versions (the latter retitled Forbidden Lover) are later lost.
