CRITIC’S CHOICE
Martin Cotton Lockdown brought with it a heightened awareness of the passage of time and, for me, a work which encapsulated this musically was Feldman’s Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello. At a consistently quiet dynamic level, small motifs circle round in the silence, often with no discernible pattern, but gradually take on the character of old friends as they appear after a long absence. For 75 minutes, nothing seemingly happens – but everything happens.
