Last Night of the Proms

As well as the usual Last Night pomp and circumstan­ce, the BBC Symphony Orchestra will give the world premiere of Mother, a new work by Gity Razaz. The American composer was taught by John Corigliano, who has praised her unique use of Middle Eastern influences.

Since his death in an asylum in 1856, Robert Schumann has been a source of fascinatio­n for psychiatri­sts, who have rediagnose­d him time and time again. Journalist Phil Hebblethwa­ite digs into the timeline of our changing attitudes towards the composer’s mental health challenges.
