The genius of Giulini
I was disappointed when reading your October travel piece on Chicago that there was no mention of Carlo Maria Giulini who, as principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, shared nine years in tandem with Georg Solti. To my mind, Giulini is the greater conductor and his performances with the Chicago orchestra were greatly appreciated by its players; this is made clear by Thomas D Saler in his biography, Serving Genius. In his later years, Giulini’s performances, especially on record,
were no match for his work WIN! 12 MONTHS with the Philharmonia in OF PRIMEPHONIC the 1950s and ’60s, but they
still have much to offer.
