Countertenor Jakub Józef Orlínski introduces some of his favourite recordings
Tallis If Ye Love Me The King’s Singers BMG 09026 680047
I am a huge admirer of The King’s Singers and this is extraordinary music. I performed in an amateur choir when I was growing up and we used to sing this beautiful piece, so I have quite a strong emotional connection with it. There is an extreme warmth in it; it’s inviting and touching. It might seem that it’s just four voices and quite easy, but it’s not, it’s actually quite difficult. To make it very beautiful is not easy.
Telemann Concerto for Recorder and Viola da Gamba in A minor Dan Laurin (recorder), Mark Caudle (viola da gamba); Arte Dei suonatori BIS BISCD1185
I could have chosen any concerto from this album, which I found years back and is still with me. I keep going back to it and I listen to the whole album from the very first piece to the very last. I found it when I was studying in Warsaw and put it on my ipod – I used to go through the city on my skateboard with this on my headphones. It’s very lively and uplifting music.
Hania Rani & Dobrawa Czocher
Con Moto
Hania Rani (piano), Dobrawa Czocher (cello) et al DG 486 0600
This is a single from an upcoming album and I chose it because I love what Hania and Dobrawa are doing. I love to have this type of music on my headphones when I travel. It helps me to breathe a little bit slower and disconnect completely from the world, or just dig deeper into the thoughts in my head or my heart. It’s classical music but with this ambient feeling. It’s atmospheric and very cinematic.
