Edita Gruberová
Born 1946 Soprano
In a career that spanned over 50 years, Edita Gruberová (pictured left in 2019) distinguished herself as a lyric-coloratura soprano and proved a versatile performer. The singer’s hometown of Bratislava was the breeding ground for her talent; studies at the city’s conservatory led to her singing at the Slovak National Theatre before she made her operatic debut in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville in 1968. Within a decade her star had risen in Europe and beyond, thanks to a stunning turn as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute in Vienna in 1970. That same role took her to productions at Glyndebourne (1973) and the Metropolitan Opera (1977), following a few years with the Vienna State Opera company. She made her final opera appearance in a 2019 production of Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux and retired just last year after devoting time to concert appearances and masterclasses. She leaves behind a clutch of great recordings – including a filmed performance of Rigoletto with
Luciano Pavarotti – and great memories for the audiences who witnessed her vocal fireworks on stage.
