BACKGROUND TO…
Schubert’s Six Moments Musicaux
This set of short piano solos was brought together for publication in 1828, the year Schubert died. They were not conceived as a set, however, with the third and sixth pieces being composed individually a few years earlier, and released as part of popular collections of works to be performed at home. Indeed, the eventual set – which Schubert completed in late 1827 – was perfect for domestic performance. Perhaps deceptive in their seeming simplicity, these ‘Musical Moments’ are full of great character and have surprising emotional depths.
