ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Vaughan Williams at 150
This spring, Radio 3 celebrates the legacy of Ralph Vaughan Williams on the great British composer’s 150th anniversary. The station will broadcast a complete cycle of Vaughan Williams’s nine symphonies, performed by the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester. Plus, on 14 May, Opera on 3 presents an archive performance of Vaughan Williams’s opera Sir John in Love, first broadcast from the English National Opera in 2006.
An edition of Between the Ears, ‘The Lark Descending’, will see bird-lover Lucy ‘Lapwing’ Hodson recording the song of the lark, which will form the melody of a new arrangement of The Lark Ascending. Vaughan Williams’s famous tune is given contemporary reimaginings by the likes of Elbow frontman and keen birdwatcher Guy Garvey and violinist Jennifer Pike (29 May). And Composer of the Week dedicates 24 hours of programming to the great composer, exploring the various facets of his life and music with expert contributors.
