NY’S revamped concert hall promises a bright future
‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,’ goes the saying. The New York Philharmonic will certainly be hoping that it has finally cracked the acoustics nut after a $550m redevelopment of its David Geffen Hall home, which re-opened in October.
First opened in 1962, the 2,700-seat venue – which has previously been called
Philharmonic Hall and Avery Fisher Hall – has been dogged by poor sound, which alterations in 1976 and ’92 failed to remedy. Now, however, its Lincoln Center owners believe that both its sound and future are bright. ‘It really is like a homecoming,’ reflected Lincoln Center president Henry Timms as the hall re-opened its doors.
