The Bergen Philharmonic has recorded music the Norwegian Arne Nordheim’s ballet score The Tempest. Conductor Edward Gardner presided over the ensemble for the recording at the city’s Grieghallen back in the summer of 2021. Lawo Classics will finally make their work available in February.
Philadelphia’s famous Curtis Institute has launched its own label. Curtis Studio will focus on both new and traditional repertoire performed by alumni, faculty and students. Its first release, just out on 6 December, features the school’s own symphony orchestra performing Rimsky-korsakov’s Scheherazade under Osmo Vänskä. Future releases will include music by Florence Price.
Deutsche Grammophon has launched its own digital audio and video content platform. Stage+ is a subscription service offering access to exclusive livestreams, a back catalogue of archive video performances and albums from the DG and Decca labels. New video content will be in 4K resolution, with the latest audio items in high resolution lossless audio, and all accessible via TV, mobile and web apps.
First Hand Records is undertaking a new survey of songs by Fanny Mendelssohn, with a two-disc showcase planned for release in late 2023. Featuring 20 world premiere items, the recording is set to take place at Leipzig’s Mendelssohn-haus in early January and will feature soprano Alison Langer and mezzosopranos Stephanie Wake-edwards and Jennifer Parker.
Linn Records had a busy December planned with recordings at Milton Court and the Menuhin School. Mithras Trio were at the former to record works by Bridge, Erőd and Helen Grime, while the Maxwell Quartet visited the latter to lay down some Haydn. Their efforts should be with us in late 2023 and early 2024 respectively.
