The English Concert has embarked on an ambitious project to make all of Handel’s music available to listen to and view online. Handel for All is an online portal through which users can access newly filmed performances of (upon completion) over
600 works completely free. Samson, Armida Abbandonata and Saul are already available and the coming year sees recordings of Solomon, Ariodante and many more.
British composer Debbie Wiseman celebrates her 60th birthday in May, and to mark the occasion she is conducting the CBSO in a programme of her music at the CBSO Centre. Works for the screen and a host of Royal occasions feature and will be recorded for an album entitled Signature, released on 30 June by Silva Screen Records.
Violinist Emily Sun was recently announced as artist-in-association for 2023 with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Sun, who is based in the UK, is set to premiere a new concerto written for her by Elena Katschernin in late April. The piece will also be recorded by ABC Classics, alongside the Korngold Violin Concerto, for release in 2024.
Staying with the violin, Antje Weithaas is in the midst of recording a cycle of Beethoven sonatas with pianist Dénes Várjon. The pair began their journey in September
2021, with continued sessions at Cologne’s Deutschlandfunk studio in December and a final set to come in May. The fruits of their labours will be released on Cavi-music.
Felix, not Fanny, is the focus of pianist Michael Stephen Brown’s new project, Mendelssohn +, which sees him record the composer’s major works for solo piano alongside pieces by prominent women from his inner circle. The first volume, recently recorded in Westchester, New York, showcases a musical love exchange between Mendelssohn and Delphine von Schauroth and will be released by First Hand Records.
