ROFGO READING
Have you attended one of the major classic race meetings, such as Le Mans Classic, and marvelled at the sight of a Porsche 917 being unloaded from a Gulf-jw Automotive liveried race transporter? If so, you witnessed the arrival of a car belonging to the amazing ROFGO collection. But who, or what, is ROFGO, and what exactly does this incredible collection include?
Roald Goethe, a successful German businessman, had grown up with a fascination for the distinctive Gulf-sponsored race cars of the 1960s. With the help of specialist Adrian Hamilton, he acquired one of the original GULFJWA Ford GT40S.
From that acorn grew a massive oak tree as, at Hamilton’s suggestion and with his help, Goethe began to collect examples of each car that raced in the livery of the Gulf oil company up until the 1980s, and beyond. Today, the collection includes no fewer than 22 examples of these distinctively hued, and historically important, race cars, including the aforementioned 917, a 908/03, Carrera RS and a Kremer K8. And, of course, there’s that amazing race transporter…
The incredible collection is described, car by car, in great detail by historian Doug Nye, with photography by Tom Wood, in a new book published by Porter Press International. It is a superbly-produced tome, and one which should be an essential part of any enthusiast’s library. It is filled with fascinating information about the cars, all presented in Nye’s authoritative yet easy to read style, and the photography is superb – as one would expect from Tom Wood.
Limited to just 900 copies, and priced at £75, ROFGO Collection is available now and carries the ISBN 978-1-907085-67-3.
