STRAIGHT TO THE POINT

-

I SWITCHED from Scottish Power to Npower in November 2011. The price comparison website I used said it would sort out everything for me.

But I’ve just noticed £88 a month has continued to go out of my account and I’m owed £2,552. Why has this happened?

R. B., Durham. YOu had set up a standing order to make your monthly payments to Scottish Power.

unlike a direct debit, only the person who sets up this type of payment can alter or cancel it. however, a Scottish Power spokesman has admitted the firm should have noticed the error sooner.

as an apology, it will pay you an extra £200 in compensation on top of the £2,552 it owed you. THE electricity tariff I signed up to with Npower last year was supposed to be fixed until March 2017. But I recently received a letter about price hikes and a separate letter claiming my tariff was fixed only until March 2015.

What is going on?

E. C., Evesham, Worcs. YOu are definitely on the Price Protector march 2017 tariff with Npower — you were sent a letter and the tariff terms and conditions booklet in October confirming this.

an Npower spokesman says the other two letters were sent to you by mistake and has apologised for the confusion caused. I BOUGHT a sound bar for my Samsung TV, as my wife and I like to watch a lot of films. We picked out one for about £130 and asked the assistant in Currys if it would work with our TV.

She said that it would. But when we tried it at home, it wasn’t compatible, so we returned it.

However, the store says it can’t take it back as there’s nothing wrong with it. Can you help?

C. D., Perry Barr, Birmingham. GO BaCK to the store and quote the Sale of Goods act 1979 to the manager.

Its rules say goods you buy must be fit for purpose.

Critically, you asked a store member if the item would work and were told — wrongly — that it would.

The sound bar is not fit for purpose and that’s the fault of the poor advice. Now it’s the store’s responsibility to sort this out.
