Malleco to Pucón

-

Malleco province was the first frontier of Chile’s deep south, pioneered by producer

Viña Aquitania (www.aquitania.cl) in 1993, and has now blossomed into one of Chile’s most promising regions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with 85ha under vine (Source: Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero – SAG, 2018). Most of Malleco’s wines are made in wineries further north, but you can visit VICAP (www.vicap.cl), where two young winemakers are making wines with the inmates at the local prison. As well as touring the boutique winery, you’ll get to visit the 90-year-old Muscat vineyard and taste the wines from this fascinating social rehabilitation project.

In the afternoon, head south to Pucón, where vines have been planted on the slopes of Villarrica volcano. Spend the afternoon there soaking up the adventure capital of Chile, and take your pick between skydiving, rafting, zip lining, skiing or soaking in the hot springs.

Where to eat For fine dining, fabulous views and a great natural wine selection, try A la Olla (www.puconalaolla.cl) in Pucón

Where to stay Opt for AndBeyond Vira Vira (www.andbeyond.com), Pucón’s Relais & Châteaux retreat surrounded by forests, or the elegant Antumalal (www.antumalal.com) boutique hotel

Local wines to try Clos des Fous, De Martino, JA Jofré, VICAP, Viña Aquitania

Touring tip Keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful araucaria, or ‘monkey puzzle’ tree, named after Arauco, the Chilean district in which the trees were first discovered.
